Baby steps…

No, we’re not talking about Zoë’s first steps. She’s pretty awesome, but let’s cut her some slack; she’s only 15 weeks old.

I’m actually talking about baby steps for me. I’ve always heard friends talk about the heartbreak they feel when returning to work and dropping off their babies for their first day of daycare or with a nanny. My friend Rachel cleverly described it as feeling like your left arm is missing. I never really dreamed how hard it could be, until I had a baby of my own. For almost four months, I’ve been spending every waking minute with Zoë and it’s come to that inevitable time of summer, where I realize that it is over for now. Working in a school, the end of summer always send a shock to your system knowing that you are back to work and those lazy days are over. I can’t really say that I had lazy days this summer with a newborn, but I am quite sad that my mornings won’t be filled with those fat cheeks looking back up at me while strolling through the park; or hearing her each morning making some of the funniest noises while also giving me this look like I know exactly what she is trying to say; or me holding her until my arms grow tired and my legs are exhausted from bouncing. My solution: the nights are going to be that much more special AND I have this wonderful woman to look after Zoë during the day…Meet Mrs. Valerie

Which brings me back to the baby steps…On Monday and Tuesday of this week, I took Zoë over to Rachel and Kristi’s house to hang out with their kids, Oliver and Esme, and for Mrs. Valerie to take care of her while I worked on a few things before I return back to school. It was a way for me to try out leaving Zoë for the first time, and also a way for Zoë to get to know someone who will be looking after her once she is in daycare. Mrs. Valerie is the lead teacher in the infant classroom at Westminster, and I couldn’t be happier. She loves little babies, and I could just tell by the way she interacted with Zoë, even if it was just for a short time. Her daughter, Taylor, joined her for the days to hang out with the kids too. I consider myself very lucky going into next week with Mrs. Valerie there for Zoë; although, it still doesn’t take away the feeling of me missing my sweet baby….
